The Benefits of Sewing
Sewing is a fantastic activity for children:
- assists in developing good hand/eye co-ordination,
- focus and concentration,
- manual dexterity (fine motor skills)
- stimulates the creative imagination
- teaches project planning skills
- gives a sense of achievement and self-worth.
- upcycling fosters creativity and environmental awareness in children
- reduces waste and encourages resourcefulness
I believe that it’s such an important life skill that all children should learn – girls and boys. However, they’re going to need ongoing support at home not least being supervised whilst using a machine. So I’m encouraging parents to get involved too. And if the children can sew alongside Mum or Dad, then that’s even more fun and creates strong family bonds and happy memories. My sewing lessons for children focus firstly on safety. Then we do some fun exercises to learn how to use the sewing machine.
I learned to sew around the age of 7, on my mum’s Singer machine (it would now be referred to as a ‘vintage’ Singer!). Some of my happiest memories are those evenings I spent sewing with Mum. I’d love to get families participating in crafts together again, and forming family bonds. This easy upcycling project will show you the value in existing fabrics harvested from used clothing.
