This dressmaking course will teach you basic dressmaking techniques so you can make your own clothes. You’ll be able to make unique clothes that fit perfectly. I’ll coach you along the way in the following:
- How to choose an appropriate pattern for your level of ability,
- Taking measurements, cutting and fitting the pattern, understanding pattern markings and instructions
- Altering the pattern for a perfect fit
- Sewing tips and techniques to achieve a professional finish
This 11 week dressmaking course will give you enough time to make a two or three simple garments such as a skirt and a top. But perhaps you’ve already done some dressmaking and would like to tackle something a bit trickier? It’s always reassuring to have help and advice to hand. I can also show you how to copy a favourite garment. Or we can do a bit of pattern cutting so you know how to make your own patterns (experienced dressmakers)
You’ll need to bring your own pattern, fabric, matching thread, plus any interfacing, zips/buttons etc which you require to complete your project. Please bring a basic sewing kit of fabric shears, sharp embroidery scissors and pins. You’ll also need a notebook. Read my blog article on what sewing equipment you’ll need for dressmaking.
If you’ve already got some dressmaking experience, then I can help you improve your techniques to achieve a professional finish.
The class size comprises no more than 4 students so I can give everyone lots of individual attention, focusing on your own personal project and how I can help you develop your particular skills.
If you’d prefer to make clothes for your children instead of yourself, then you can do this here too.
Most other Dressmaking courses are teaching you to make the same project as everyone else, at the same time. However, I believe in actually teaching you to sew. So you learn all the foundation skills and can apply them to anything you want. Choosing a pattern and suitable fabric is part of that learning experience. I recommend Simplicity and New Look patterns as they have a great range of styles and are reasonably easy for a Beginner to follow.
Level: Beginners – Experienced
(tuition is personally tailored so you learn at your own skill level and pace) You must be able to use a sewing machine confidently, be comfortable handling and cutting fabric, and be able to sew straight accurate seams. If not, then why not try one of my Beginners classes.
Duration: 2 hours per week for 11 weeks
