After-School Sewing Club Description:

A 6-week course for 8-12 year old beginner sewers! With one to two projects a week, everyone will leave with a great introduction to this life-long skill. These after school sewing classes will be a very fun, relaxed environment for making friends and learning machine basics, with an introduction to patterns and garment creation.

The after-school sewing club will be taught by Charlotte Delahunt, a sewist since age 7, and now costume design student at Edinburgh College of Art with two years of experience teaching at a sewing school and a huge passion for sharing her skills with kids!

What will my child learn at After-School Sewing Club?

  • sewing machine skills
  • cutting and sewing fabric
  • project planning
  • design skills to stimulate their imagination
  • each project offers progressive challenges.
  • Projects include drawstring bag, pencil roll & cushion,

Fabrics will be offered at the studio but the kids are more than welcome to bring their own if there is a specific pattern they would like – we will be working with poly cotton. No other supplies are necessary.

Our 90 minute Monday classes will give everyone a great knowledge of sewing with machines and a creative attitude towards realizing their designs with sewing!

8-12 years old is the perfect age at which to learn how to sew.  Sewing is an ideal creative activity for children.  It develops their manual dexterity, hand/eye co-ordination, and encourages focus, concentration and project management skills. Completing a sewing project from start to finish fosters a sense of accomplishment that can boost a child’s morale and self-confidence. And it’s really great fun! Plus it gives them a huge sense of achievement, self-worth and reduces anxiety.

Because they’re having such a great time, they don’t actually realise how many valuable sewing skills they are learning which will stay with them for life.

Children will need ongoing supervision and support at home. It is recommended that parents attend one of Artisan Stitch’s adults sewing courses. Not only will it help you keep up with the kids, but it will give you a shared interest  so you can enjoy making memories together.

Artisan Stitch holds a Certificate of Excellence and is rated ‘Best sewing classes in Edinburgh’.  A UK Enterprise award followed for Best Sewing Classes 2020 and the Best Private Sewing Education & Tuition 2021, Best Creative Textiles Workshop  2022/3, Best Craft Course Provider 2023/24 and Best Sewing Tuition provider 2024/25.

Artisan Stitch was founded by Jen Skedd, also a lifelong sewist since age 7, and now a Textile Artist and designer. Jen also has a passion for sharing her skills with children to ensure these skills are passed on.
